“Teach us to number our days aright [to realize the brevity of life], so that we may grow in wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 (NIV, Message)
For kids, waiting for Christmas is torture. The entire month of December, it’s like the clock and calendar conspire together to slow way way down. Especially this last week. Then, the moment Christmas comes, the clock and calendar conspire again to go super-sonic fast. It’s a long build up and a quick let down. At least it was for me as a kid.
Perhaps you are reading this at work - today is Monday. Where did the weekend go? Sunday nights for me are like Friday for most of you. I get to rest. However, when your week is winding down, mine starts to wind up.
Wouldn’t it be great if life had a fast forward button and a pause button? Then we could speed right through things like work and winter. It’d be great to use fast forward to get right to the special moments and then hit pause so the time doesn’t pass and we can savor the special moments forever.
Someone has said that God created time so everything didn’t happen at once. Rhythms, seasons, and cycles are his creative work. Really there is a beauty in it, and purpose. Don’t fight the clock. The calendar and the clock are not enemies, they are gifts.
PRAYER: God teach me to fully live in the moment and be thankful. Teach me to not waste time. I pray for patience during the moments you make me wait. I want to milk the moments you give me for all they are worth. Mostly I pray that you will break into time and meet me in the now! Come back, God—how long do we have to wait?…Surprise us with love at daybreak; then we’ll skip and dance all the day long. Make up for the bad times with some good times…
Time goes by so swiftly, and time can do so much,
if you use it as God Wills.
How many times would we have liked to “re-live” the moment?
I remember this pastor who said “Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is not
yet yours, so live today”.
Merry Christmas
