The holidays were always so special when my grandparents were alive. I remember when I was growing up, my grandma would host a Swedish Christmas - lutefisk (none of us, kids would eat it, and we would pass the platter at arm’s length with our heads turned and holding our breath!), fruit soup, potato baloney, peas, mashed potatoes, rye bread and a large assortment of homemade cookies. We always looked forward to that. Grandma died in 1993; my grandpa died in 1977, so I barely remember him.

My other grandparents died in 2004 and 2005. I still miss them. This was the grandma, who was the gift peaker, tearing open one corner of her packages. She passed that trait on to my mom!

Now we celebrate Christmas with my parents and sometimes with relatives, too. I have fond memories of my grandparents, and I thank God for the Swedish traditions that my grandmother graced upon my family. Unfortunately, she didn’t teach me to cook, but she was the best cook ever! She used the old fashioned method with all of her food and baking preparations: a pinch of this, a dash of that, a fistful of flour, and everything always turned out delicious!

    God bless you all!
