“One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and seek him in his temple.” Psalm 27:4
Lists…
Santa has one – kids panic at the thought that he checks it twice carefully noting on the list who is naughty and who is nice. Perhaps you make lists of things to do and things to buy. Every week my wife cranks out a grocery list. Of course, there is the dreaded “honey-do” list. The mafia has a hit-list. Dave Letterman has top ten lists.
My weekend message series this month is called “WishList” and it’s all about the things on God’s list that what he wants from us this Christmas season. I’d guess you have a wish list for your life. What is on it? And what would still be on it if you had to pear it down to say, only three things? You can see where this is going… what is THE ONE THING on your life’s wish list? What number is your relationship with God? This is revealing isn’t it.
My wife can tell when other things start to take prominence over her in my life. God can tell when you aren’t “seeking him first.” In the Bible, he uses the vocabulary of adultery to talk about how he feels about his people seeking lessor loves (idols). He’s jealous for you alone and the Bible is full of his personal invitations to live in intimacy with Him.
King David was a man of one pursuit… one thing… zeal for the Lord’s house consumed him. Ask God to rekindle the fire of your first love.
PRAYER: Lord, I renounce the lessor loves in my life and today want to renew a covenant of faithfulness to you alone. Stir my heart this day with fire for you and you alone. You alone are my desire.
Many years ago I was encouraged to read my bible for 2 minutes a day. Since I didn’t read my bible much but wanted to put God first in my life, I thought, “I can do this”.
First on my list every day was “2 minutes a day”
Now , I realize it was one of the best things I have ever commited to.
