Several years ago, when our daughter was 7, she finally asked her mom the question. She did have an interesting slant on the matter when it persued it. Here’s the dialogue:
Kate: Mom, is Santa real?
Mom: Well, Kate, what do you think? (This question buys you time!)
Kate: I think I’d better know, because if he’s not real, and I don’t know then my kids won’t get any presents.
This conversation covered many bases. First: my grandchildren will be taken care of at some distant day in the future. And secondly, this conversation also led to revelations about the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy.
