Imagine being a child in a war torn country. Or in a land hit by famine. Or a New Orleans child after Hurricane Katrina. For these kids, Christmas gifts may be a dream that seems to have no possibility of coming true.
Several years ago, churches all over our city began participating in Operation Christmas Child. The concept is simple. Pack a shoe box with gifts like markers, flashlights, small games, hard candy and basic toiletries and send it off to children in war torn or traumatized areas of the world. Some children took the amount their parents would have spent on one gift, and bought gifts for another child. Others raised money for the gifts by doing extra chores or odd jobs. But no matter how they funded their gift, everyone came away with the understanding that it is “more blessed to give than receive“.
Operation Christmas Child accepts shoeboxes all year round at this address: Operation Christmas Child, Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, 801 Bamboo Road, Boone, NC 28607. Use the link above to find out more gift ideas and where in the world your Christmas box might be sent.
